The basics
What spray foam is—and what it is not.
Spray polyurethane foam is a material applied to a prepared surface where it expands and cures. Depending on the product and the assembly, it may provide insulation and contribute to air sealing. It is not a universal answer for every attic, crawlspace, wall, roof, or comfort concern.
Insulation is one part of a complete building envelope. Windows, doors, framing connections, ducts, roof details, existing moisture, ventilation, and workmanship also affect how a building performs.
Foam types
Open-cell and closed-cell: start with the location.
Open-cell
Open-cell foam is generally lighter and expands into cavities and around irregular framing. It may come up in conversations about accessible cavities, rooflines, and areas where air sealing is part of the goal. The surrounding assembly and intended use of the space still matter.
Closed-cell
Closed-cell foam is denser and more rigid. It may come up when limited cavity depth, the specific assembly, and moisture-management characteristics require a closer look. It is not automatically the better choice; the project conditions guide the conversation.
Useful information for an estimate: the space involved, access, what is already there, any visible moisture concerns, the project goal, and whether a renovation or HVAC change is planned.
Before installation
What to expect around the work.
- Review the scope. Confirm the accessible area, materials, preparation, and the planned outcome.
- Prepare the space. Access, belongings, existing insulation, and site protection are discussed before work begins.
- Follow safety instructions. Occupants, pets, and other trades should follow the selected product’s manufacturer guidance for ventilation and re-entry. There is no single universal re-entry time.
- Complete and inspect. The work area and scope should be reviewed before the project is considered complete.
Ask a contractor
Questions worth asking.
- What building area and assembly are you evaluating?
- What preparation or existing-material removal is included?
- What product data and site conditions guide the application?
- How will the work affect access, occupants, pets, and ventilation?
- What should I expect to inspect when the work is complete?
